Assignment 5: A rewiev on assinment 3 and 4

When designing my own assignment I wanted to do something that could be useful for the future in our teaching proficiency. I decided on letting my classmates writing a cover letter for a job application as a teacher since that is something we all sooner or later have to make in order to get a job. The aim of the task was to prepare for the future and practice on writing a formal application with all things that has to be included. Since nobody has responded on that assignment (which is an effect of a mistake I made, somehow my comment on Marie´s assignment did not show up in her blog which caused that two people chose her and no one was left to chose my assignment) I cannot evaluate it. The only conclusion I draw is that the assignment maybe was a bit too difficult or hard or maybe even boring.

I chose to do Marie´s assignment which was an application for money for making a trip with students to London. I decided upon it because I found it useful and instructive. What I mean is that it is not unlikely that I have to write such an application in the future and anyway I find it a good exercise in writing formal letters which is something that I surely to a greater or less extent will have to do in the future. I tried to follow her instructions when writing it and according to the response she gave me I think I succeed.

By looking around in my classmates´ blogs I got a lot of tips and ideas about how to use different kinds of writing in order to improve myself and to convey different messages. Since we will become teachers I think the way of letting us create our own assignments and assess the classmates work is a good task which gives us instructive experience for our future working life.

Assignment 4: An application (designed by Mari Mainz)

Dear Headmaster

Last summer I had the privilege to meet a primary teacher in London. Since we are teaching students in the same age we established a letter exchange. We focus on writing about everyday life and cultural experiences. The students are very committed in their letter writing and I have noticed that they have improved both their writing skills and cultural awareness. It has also encouraged and inspired them to learn more about life in England and the English language.

One month ago I got an invitation from the school in England for us to come visiting them. This would be a great opportunity for the students to improve their communicative skills as oral proficiency. A visit would take the cultural exchange one step further by giving the students the rare chance to experience life in England and visiting a lot of cultural places. For most of my students, this will be a unique opportunity to go abroad and to live in a host family.

The students would gain a lot from this trip not only in a linguistic and a cultural perspective but also considering self-consciousness. According to my experience, travelling in a group with a special purpose not only strengthens the spirit of community but also strengthens the self-esteem in each individual.

Me as a teacher would also gain a lot from this trip and I would definitely get a great number of tips and ideas to bring back to the school. I see this as a kind of in service training.

Hereby I apply for money enough to finance the trip for eighteen students and three adults. I hope you realize what investigation this is and that you are willing to facilitate this trip for us.

Sincerely

Assignment 3: A job application

You are probably aiming for becoming a teacher. Sooner or later you must apply for a job. Why not starting immediately? Find an authentic job advertisement for a job that suits your future qualifications (you can find it at www.ams.se, http://www.eteach.com/, http://www.tameside.gov.uk/jobs/teachers). Make an application for that specific place, telling why you are perfect suited for that job.

Writing a covering letter for job application differs a bit from other types of writing both formal and informal texts. First of all you have to keep in mind that it is a sales letter and you have to persuade the employer that your skills and qualities are favorable for the job. The letter should contain:
· A statement of the specific job being sought and the source of information about the job (where you found the advertisement)
· Summary of your qualifications
· Your specific qualities that are favorable for the job
· Reference to your CV
· A request for an interview
Since it is a business letter do not forget a formal salutation and enclosure, a heading, date line and addresses both to yourself and the employer. For further guiding, see Academic writing chapter 12)

Best of luck!
Teresia

Assigmnment 2: Argumentative writing

This question should be the most important election issue 2010

Take one minute thinking about your name. Say it loud to yourself and feel what you associate it with. Does not it to a great extent feel as a part of you and you identity? Now, think about whom is the owner of your name. Is it you or is it the government? What if somebody would take the name away from you? What would then happen to your personality? Should we not have the right to have the name we want?

The name is for many people an important part of the identity. The name is something to be identified and associated with. Sweden is claimed to be one of the most equal states in the world, a state where all people have the same right irrespective of sex, age, looks and ethical background. Sweden is also a country where it is very important that individuals have the freedom to express themselves. That individual freedom is limited by the law (1982:670) that says you are not allowed to call yourself what name you want. There is a certain authority that decides whether the name is acceptable or not. In a modern country as Sweden that law is extremely old and does not correspond with the individualistic approach that is to be seen when dealing with other issues.

For me it is obvious, as an individual in a democratic country you should have the right to decide your name. The reverse is insulting. If you want a name that is in accordance with your personality and character you should not be limited by an old-fashioned law. Therefore I consider the most important election issue 2010 should be to abolish the Names Adoption Act.

People who disagree with me might claim that if you allow people to choose what name they want there will be no limit in what ridiculous and absurd names to expect. Of course that may happen but at the present time there are already such names and it is not worse giving a baby a ridiculous name than to treat it badly as is the fact in many families today.

To be called a strange name might cause bullying among children. If that happen, the reason is not the name itself, but the intolerance of people that look or act differently. Children can find any reason for teasing and according to me it is all about how the adults handle it. People will soon get used to strange names and then the risk of bullying will abate.

It can also cause confusion and misunderstandings if the name is not sex-typed. I am very well aware of that and once again the problem is nowhere else than in people´s minds. Look at it from this aspect: it would be much easier for transsexual persons in society and people will not be treated differently in for an instance a written assignment because of their sex.

To be a part of modern society and protect the individualistic freedom of people the Names Adoption Act need to be abolished.
